Suppression of Rev. Han Sang Ryol in S. Korea Censured

Pyongyang, December 5 (KCNA) — A spokesman for the North Side Committee for Implementing June 15 Joint Declaration issued a statement Monday as regards the fact that the south Korean puppet Supreme Court imposed heavy penalty on Rev. Han Sang Ryol.

The statement said:

Some days ago the south Korean puppet Supreme Court finally sentenced Rev. Han Sang Ryol, who visited the northern half of Korea on the 10th anniversary of the publication of the June 15 joint declaration last year, to three years of imprisonment and three years of suspension of qualification by invoking the notorious “National Security Law”.

Rev. Han is a righteous reunification champion who has devoted his all to national concord and independent reunification.

All the activities he did during his visit to the northern half of Korea have won support and sympathy of all his fellow countrymen as they were very just actions for promoting the national concord and accelerating the peace and reunification of the country in the spirit of the June 15 joint declaration.

Nevertheless, the puppet group imposed severe punishment on him. This is a grave challenge to the aspiration and demand of the Koreans to put an end to the distrust and confrontation between the north and the south and achieve the national reunification through reconciliation and unity.

He visited the north according to his national conscience and faith to protect the June 15 joint declaration and call for peace and reunification. How can such activities be incriminated as “enemy-benefiting”?

The North Side Committee for Implementing June 15 Joint Declaration bitterly denounces the puppet group’s vicious suppression of him as an unpardonable treacherous and anti-reunification crime that ruthlessly tramples down the desire of the fellow countrymen for reunification and the freedom of religious belief and incites confrontation with the DPRK.

Now in south Korea the struggle of people from all walks of life is running higher like a volcano to protest the puppet group’s moves for confrontation with fellow countrymen and its sycophancy toward the U.S. and the passage of the “motion calling for ratification of U.S.-south Korea Free Trade Agreement”. The conservative “government” is at a serious ruling crisis.

So, the group of traitors is making last-ditch efforts to maintain its remaining days by means of kicking off a campaign of crackdown on the progressive organizations and reunification champions and creating a horrible atmosphere of repression.

If the group swims against the trend of the times, disregarding the people’s mindset, this will only precipitate its miserable end.

It should stop the suppression of activities of organizations of all social standings and personages for implementing the north-south joint declarations and cancel the unreasonable punishment imposed on Rev. Han and set him free at once.

Free activities for reunification can never be ensured in south Korea as long as the NSL, which defines fellow countrymen as “enemy”, exists and the conservative group keen on confrontation with fellow countrymen stays in power.

The people from all walks of life in south Korea should positively turn out in the struggle to get the NSL abolished and punish the group of traitors hell-bent on fascism, confrontation and permanent division by waging a more vigorous nationwide reunification movement under the uplifted banner of the north-south joint declarations.
